Tasting Notes: Tasting notes taken 28 December 2011, 9 days after kegging. Dispensed from tap into a pint glass. Appearance: hazy light-orange hue with two fingers of frothy white foam. A good, chunky lacing is left on the glass as I drink it down. Looks like a decent IPA. (4) Smell: big, fruity nose with tangerine and grapefruit. There is also a pretty rich malt component underneath the hops; it's almost nutty in character. I attribute this to the 1332 yeast. Overall, I quite like it. (4) Taste: really rich flavor of citrusy hops and characterful malt. I think I adore Citra and Amarillo together like this. Bitterness is high, but not harsh. I could drink tons of this stuff. (4.5) Mouthfeel: medium-light body but carbonation is not particularly high. I feel like I've pretty sufficiently conditioned this beer, so perhaps the light body is contributing to a lack of good mouthfeel. The Nugget IPA with this same yeast had a much better feel, so I'm thinking my low mash temp (148° for this vs. 154° for the Nugget) has hurt me here. Next time I use this yeast (or do any IPA, probably), I would be wise to keep my mash temps on the higher side. (3.5) Drinkability: a very drinkable IPA; I could drink a ton of this stuff. These Citra hops provide a good bitterness without being too rough. I wish the mouthfeel were a little better, though. (4) Overall score 4.15 (A-). This is a super tasty beer, easily my favorite IPA that I've made. This recipe will require very little tweaking: mash higher, and maybe consider using 1272 instead of the 1332. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
