Tasting Notes: Reviewed 5/8/2010. Dispensed directly from keg into a pint glass. Appearance: rich orange color, trending to brown, with just a touch of haze. Head poured one finger of white foam which dissipated rapidly. Light wispy clots of lace hold onto the glass; better than nothing, but not terribly impressive. (3.5) Smell: sweet malt and earthy hops. A pretty good balance; this is not a complex beer, but it really wasn't meant to be one anyway. (3.5) Taste: malt strikes a balance between sweet and dry. Hop flavor is somewhat subtle in strength and quite earthy in character. The bitterness really creeps up on you; it almost has a different character depending on where on the tongue you taste it. A pretty solid little IPA. (4) Mouthfeel: body is medium and somewhat heavily carbonated. I'm still trying to figure out my kegging technique, but I'm the kind of guy who'd rather have it a little overcarbonated than a little undercarbonated. The result here is a pretty rich, creamy texture which, while not to style, is rather pleasant nonetheless. (4) Drinkability: this is a pretty tasty and refreshing IPA. The bitterness tends to build on the palate, but I think it could stand up to a session if you were really into hops. Right now, it's probably a few degrees above optimal serving temperature, but it's quite drinkable nonetheless. (4) Overall score 3.8 (B+). This was an interesting experiment in seeing what a boatload of hops can do to a beer. The answer? A solid IPA. Maybe my hop utilization is a little lower than a commercial brewery, so my calculated IBUs bear little resemblance to actual IBUs; or, perhaps, my palate just doesn't sense hops well. In any case, it seems like I'll really have to ramp up IBUs to get a good bitterness and hop content in the future. I am also impressed with the flavor complexities yielded by having so many different addition times. This is something with which I'll have to experiment further. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
